Our Approach

If a child or an adult previously has had speech therapy, the first meeting is often a consultation. Consultations take about 60 minutes. A consultation provides the speech language pathologist the opportunity to talk with the client, parent, or other family members, discuss the client’s goals, review previous evaluation and/or progress reports, determine if additional testing/evaluation is necessary, or determine if therapy can be started without additional evaluation.

A screening is a very brief, general assessment of an individual’s communication skills including articulation, fluency, voice, grammar, vocabulary, and conversational skills. Screenings usually take only 15 to 20 minutes to conduct, and are relatively inexpensive procedures. Screenings only indicate whether further, in-depth testing is warranted in any specific communication area(s).

An evaluation is a comprehensive, in-depth assessment of an individual’s communication skills. Evaluations typically take an hour or more to administer and are more costly. Comprehensive speech and language evaluations give specific, detailed information about the areas tested. The results of the evaluation are discussed with client and/or family members during a follow-up appointment. During the follow-up appointment, a written evaluation report of the results, including professional recommendations, is provided.

Based on the profile of the client’s strengths and weaknesses, along with input from family members, teachers, and other professionals, a treatment plan is developed. The treatment plan outlines a set of short-term goals (typically 3 to 6 month goals). These goals form the basis for developing a therapy program which meets the individual’s specific needs. Adult and pediatric clients have the opportunity to utilize state-of-the-art computer programs and other age and interest appropriate activities to facilitate learning and acquisition of the short-term goals. An individualized home program is developed to help with carryover of newly acquired skills. The frequency and length of therapy sessions vary and range from 30, 45, or 60 minutes per session, 1 to 2 times per week.
